Dr. Julia Tortolani is a National Board-Certified (NCCAOM) Acupuncturist

She practices Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) through a holistic, integrative approach. Her treatments draw from a range of modalities, including acupuncture, acupressure, cupping, manual therapy, herbal medicine, and dietary guidance—tailored to each patient’s individual needs.

Dr. Tortolani specializes in integrative medicine, supported by extensive training and clinical experience in hospital-based settings. She remains current in her field through ongoing review of medical journals, acupuncture case studies, and clinical research, applying a critical and evidence-informed perspective to her work.

She frequently collaborates with Western medical providers and is comfortable interpreting laboratory results, reviewing imaging reports, and helping patients better understand their diagnoses. She also advises on appropriate complementary therapies based on each patient’s unique presentation.

Julia donates her time weekly at the Dempsey Cancer Center, where she provides acupuncture in a no-cost clinic for cancer patients. In this setting, she works collaboratively with oncologists, radiologists, surgeons, and nutritionists to support coordinated, comprehensive care.

While she considers herself a general practitioner, Dr. Tortolani is frequently referred for her success in treating orthopedic and sports injuries, chronic pain, autoimmune conditions, neuropathy, and respiratory disorders, women’s health concerns, and fertility.

As a parent of two young children, she brings a thoughtful and engaging approach to pediatric care. She utilizes gentle, non-needle techniques—such as acupressure applied with fingertips or smooth tools—to stimulate therapeutic points effectively.

PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY

Julia believes the body communicates through a language of sensory signals. While pain is often the most obvious expression of “dis-ease,” more subtle cues—such as fatigue, swelling, itching, reduced range of motion, disturbed sleep, and digestive discomfort—also reflect underlying imbalance. These signals provide valuable clinical insight and help guide treatment toward restoring well-being.
In addition to listening carefully to these cues, Julia incorporates traditional diagnostic methods, including tongue observation, radial pulse palpation, and facial assessment, to refine her Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) diagnosis and inform precise treatment strategies.

INTAKE

A thorough, in-person intake is essential to understanding both a patient’s long-standing medical history and their current life experience. Context often reveals the underlying cause—the “why.” By addressing root causes rather than masking symptoms, treatment can provide more durable relief.
Maintaining the body’s natural sensory awareness allows patients to recognize early signs of imbalance and make informed lifestyle adjustments that support long-term health.

APPROACH

Julia’s approach is collaborative and patient-centered. She works in partnership with her patients to restore health and balance, emphasizing attentive listening and careful tracking of changes over time.
She integrates evidence-informed practice with measurable outcomes, using tools such as pain scales and functional metrics to monitor progress. By documenting effective interventions, she continuously refines treatment to maximize efficiency and therapeutic impact.

EMBRACING DIVERSITY
A
s a member of the LGBTQ community, Julia is committed to providing inclusive, affirming care to a diverse patient population. She has experience supporting transgender patients, including those undergoing gender-affirming surgeries and hormone replacement therapy (HRT).
She also has several years of experience working with individuals in the autistic community within both orphanage and group living settings. Julia is a dedicated advocate and ally to Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), and strives to create a safe, respectful, and supportive clinical environment for all.

TREATMENT COSTS

Julia is committed to making acupuncture accessible. For individuals who find cost to be a barrier, she offers a complimentary 20-minute phone consultation to explore options, including a discounted sliding-scale fee structure.

MODALITIES

Julia’s practice is grounded in the Four Pillars of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Treatment plans may include:
Acupuncture or Acupressure to regulate the flow of Qi (vital energy)
Manual Therapies including Tui Na, Gua Sha, and Moxibustion
Chinese Herbal Medicine and Nutritional Therapy (“Food as Medicine”)
Qi Gong (movement-based energy cultivation and exercise)

SEEING THE WHOLE PERSON

Julia takes a holistic view of each patient, considering physical symptoms within the broader context of constitution, lifestyle, and environmental influences—such as climate exposure and psycho-emotional stress.
This integrated perspective allows her to develop individualized treatment strategies that support meaningful and sustainable change.

Healing Practices may involve:
  • Restoring the flow of Qi and Blood where it has become obstructed
  • Applying warming therapies to address cold and constriction
  • Strengthening deficiencies through targeted nutrition and herbs
  • Incorporating movement, stretching, and strengthening practices
  • Anticipating seasonal influences to improve resilience
  • Treating the individual, not just the condition
  • Cultivating mindful awareness and positive healing intention

TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE (TCM)

TCM is based on identifying diagnostic “patterns”—constellations of signs and symptoms that reflect the body’s internal state. These patterns are organized according to organ systems and their associated energetic pathways (Qi channels).
They are also understood through the Five Element framework: Fire, Earth, Metal, Water, and Wood, which provides a comprehensive model of physiological and emotional balance.

EAST AND WEST INTEGRATION

Julia is skilled in integrating TCM within a Western medical framework. Her doctoral training emphasized acupuncture in clinical medical settings, and she has extensive hospital-based experience.
While practicing in New York City, she was credentialed to provide acupuncture at:
  • Veterans Administration Hospital NY Harbor Healthcare System
  • NYU Lutheran Medical Center, Brooklyn
  • NYU Langone Hospital – Hammerman Health and Wellness Center
  • Housing Works Community Health Center, Manhattan
  • Pacific College Acupuncture Clinic (Pediatric Internship)

NEEDLING STYLE: JAPANESE

Julia’s needling style is influenced by Japanese acupuncture traditions, characterized by the use of finer gauge needles, gentle technique, and shallow insertion. She frequently utilizes Japanese Seirin needles and emphasizes precision and sensitivity in treatment.
Her training includes study with Nigel Dawes at the Kampo Institute.
