Dr. Julia Tortolani is a National Board-Certified (NCCAOM) Acupuncturist.

She practices Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) using a holistic approach. Her treatments can weave together a variety of modalities including acupuncture/acupressure, cupping, massage, herbal formulations or dietary guidance.
She specializes in Integrative Medicine as she has extensive training and experience working in the hospital setting. She enjoys staying up-to-date in her knowledge by reading medical journals, acupuncture case reports, and clinical trials with a critical eye.
She is comfortable conversing with western medical doctors, interpreting blood tests, reviewing imaging reports, helping her patients better understand their medical diagnoses, and what forms of complementary medicine might be most applicable in their unique case.

When it comes to her patient base, she considers herself a “general practitioner,” but has found patients are often referred because of her successful treatment of orthopedics/sports injuries, chronic pain, autoimmune conditions, ENT/respiratory illness, women's' health, and fertility.
As a parent of two young children, she has cultivated a gentle and fun approach to the utilization of pediatric acu-pressure modalities which employ no needles, but instead uses finger tips and smooth wooden tools to activate the same body points, and create the desired effects. The majority of Julia’s pediatric patients have been referred by their respective pediatricians.

PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY
Julia believes the body communicates through a language of sensory signals. The most obvious sign of "dis-ease" is pain, but there are also many more subtle cues indicating disharmony and imbalance, such as fatigue, swelling, itching, reduced range of motion, disturbed sleep, and digestive discomfort. These indications are valuable information which can be utilized to direct treatment towards the restoration of well-being. Additionally, Julia examines the patient's tongue, palpates the radial pulse, and reads the facial complexion to refine a TCM diagnosis, inform acupuncture point selection, and select the appropriate treatment modality.
INTAKE
Taking the time to do an in-person detailed intake interview, is key to understanding the patient's long standing medical history and their more recent life experience. The context often indicates "the why." If we know "the why" behind a condition, then we can treat the root cause, providing longer-term relief. Providing relief with-out numbing the body's sensation, means we have not muted the body's language, this then enables us to recognize slight signs and symptoms, and make lifestyle adjustments that keep us in balance.
APPROACH
Julia’s approach is collaborative. She partners with her patients to restore health and well-being. She believes in listening carefully, being acutely attuned to signs and symptoms, what they indicate, and how they change over the course of treatment. She believes in evidence-based medicine and charting patient progress using metrics, such as a pain scale, so patient improvement can be tracked over time. By documenting what works, she can leverage a larger body of knowledge toward implementing the most efficient and effective techniques.

EMBRACING DIVERSITY
As a member of the LGBTQ community, Julia works with a broad spectrum of patient populations. She is well versed in transgender issues, trans-surgeries, and HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy). Additionally Julia has several years experience caring for individuals who are members of the Autistic Community in an orphanage and group living environments. Julia can be relied upon as an advocate and ally by all Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC).

MODALITIES
Julia's practice focuses on delivering The 4 Pillars of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Treatments may consist of:
1) Acupuncture or Acupressure to balance the flow of Qi (energy systems)
2) Manual Therapies Tui Na (massage), Gua Sha, Moxabustion therapy
3) Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine & "Food as Medicine"
4) QiGong (Physical Exercise and Energy Medicine)
SEEING THE WHOLE PERSON
Using an holistic approach, Julia strives to see any condition, injury, or dis-ease within the unique context each patient's particular constitution, lifestyle choices, exposure to environmental factors ranging from exposure to things like damp-cold weather, or psycho-emotional stress. Gathering all that information she forms an integrated understanding of her patients and works in partnership with them to affect positive change.
There are many ways to approach healing. Perhaps we can't change the weather but we can....
- Promote healing by restoring the flow of Qi (energy) and Blood where its been obstructed due to injury or illness
- Apply heat therapy where their is cold/constriction (stiffness/soreness)
- Fortify weakness with powerful herbs and the proper selection of foods
- Employ stretching and physical strengthening exercises
- Learn strategies to help anticipate how we respond to the seasons, so the body is prepared to better withstand whatever life throws our way.
- See the whole person, in their particular context, not just the issue or the condition in isolation.
- Meditate and act with positive-minded healing intention.
TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE (TCM)
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is based on recognizing classic diagnostic "Patterns" which are a constellation of signs and symptoms, on a situational map, which encompasses the whole human state of well-being. These patterns are put into categories named for the major organ systems and their corresponding energetic (Qi) pathways through out the body. The organ systems also map to the 5-Elements: Fire, Earth, Metal, Water, and Wood.

EAST vs. WEST
Julia is well versed at integrating TCM into a Western Medical Mindset. Her Doctoral Degree focused on Acupuncture within a Western Medical Setting. She has extensive training and experience working in the hospital setting. While practicing in New York City, she was credentialed to treat patients with acupuncture at the following medical centers:
- Veterans Administration Hospital NY, Harbor Healthcare System
- NYU Lutheran Medical Center, Sunset Park, Brooklyn, NY
- NYU Langone Hospital Hammerman Health and Wellness Center, NY
- Housing Works Community Health Center Manhattan, NY
- Pediatric Acupuncture Clinical Internship Pacific College Acupuncture Clinic
NEEDLING STYLE: JAPANESE
There a wide spectrum of acupuncture styles. If the approach to needling was rooted in a country of origin, then Julia's style is more Japanese in nature. She tends towards finer gauges and often chooses a Seirin needle, combined with a gentle approach, shallower needling depth, and more finesse. Julia studied Japanese Acupuncture and Moxabustion techniques under renowned Scholar Nigel Dawes at the Kampo, Institute.
SPECIALIZATION
When it comes to her patient base, she considers herself a “General Practitioner,” but she has found patients are often referred to her because of her successful treatment of orthopedics/sports injuries, chronic pain, autoimmune conditions, ENT/respiratory illness, womens' health and fertility, and conditions that do not respond to traditional medical interventions.

PEDIATRICS
As a parent of two young children, she has cultivated a gentle and fun approach to the utilization of pediatric modalities that do not require needles but instead leverage acu-pressure, pediatric Tui-Na, and Japanese Shoni-Shin. 80% of Julia’s pediatric patients have been referred by their respective pediatricians.
